Pin Job on Highway TT

At 0906 hours on Monday 17 December, 2012 units were alerted for a motor vehicle collision on Highway TT.  On arrival, the companies found a single vehicle overturned in the middle of the roadway with one occupant still inside.  The vehicle was stabilized and members removed the occupant using a long spine board.  The victim was turned over to Lake West Ambulance and transported the Lake Regional.

SBFPD units remain on the scene to assist the Highway Patrol with traffic control.

We would like to remind everyone that seat belts can save lives.  Use caution, obey the posted speed limits and always wear your seat belt.

Another Working Fire

Less than 24 hours after the District responded to working dwelling on Osage Place, Sunrise Beach units were alerted for a natural cover fire endangering structures. Within a minute of the initial dispatch, the communications center advised that they had received a report that the dwelling was now involved. As unties crossed the Hurricane Deck bridge they observed a large dwelling well involved in fire. Engine 12 – 22 and Car 1 arrived and confirmed the working fire, added additional units from Mid County, Gravois, & Northwest, and then went to working placing heavy water lines in service.

After a hard battle that involved several units to include a fire boat from Mid County, the fire was placed under control. Although the building of origin was a complete loss, the aggressive efforts of all units on scene resulted in the damage being limited to that dwelling. Chief Reilly is quoted as saying “There certainly was the potential of the fire spreading from the original dwelling and if it was not for the hard work of our units and the other Districts that assisted us things could have been much worse. I feel very bad for the people who lost their home and wish we could have stopped the fire sooner, but this was a case where there was just too much fire when we arrived to do more than what we did.”

Great Stop for the A Platoon

At 12:47 hours on Saturday 24 November, units from the A Platoon were alerted for a natural cover fire endangering a structure. The assignment was quickly upgraded to a dwelling response based on additional information provided by our dispatch center.

On arrival units found a large volume of fire consuming the deck and threatening to extend into the dwelling. The first arriving members deployed a hand line and made an excellent stop on the fire. Damage was limited to the deck and some siding on the house.

No doubt the A Platoon made a great stop and they rightfully deserve a “tip of the helmet.”

Working Fire

At 10:12 hours on Thursday 8 November, Sunrise Beach units were dispatched to a report of the dwelling fire on Rain Drop Drive. As the units were turning out, the Camden County Dispatch Center advised that they were receiving reports of a dwelling well involved. Mutual Aid was requested from Lake Ozark, Gravois, and the Mid – County Fire Districts.

First arriving units encountered a single family well involved. A portable monitor was deployed along with multiple hand lines. Fire Boats from Lake Ozark and Sunrise Beach were also deployed to assist with fire suppression and water supply. After an aggressive attack, the bulk of the fire was knocked down.

Thankfully there was no one at home at the time of the fire. Unfortunately the dwelling and its contents were a total loss.

A special note of thanks to our community is called for. After making an appeal to the public, many of our citizens contribute clothing and household goods to help the fire victims. This is just another example that we see of the fine community that we are part of.

Motor Vehicle Collision with Entrapment

At 23:19 hours on Saturday 22 September E 12 – 22 was alerted for a MVC response, possible entrapment, in the 12000 block of North State Highway 5.  On arrival of E 12 – 22 Acting Captain Baker confirmed that one person was trapped and that units would be taking actions.   Vehicle stabilization was accomplished by using cribbing and the Rescue Jack system.  Hydraulic rescue tools and saw-z-alls were used to remove the vehicle’s roof and driver’s door.  The patient was extricated on a long spine board and transferred to the care of a Lake West EMS unit.

Units remained on the scene for approximately one hour to provide lighting for the investigation and assist with traffic control.  A special thanks to all the volunteers that responded when the assignment was re-toned.  The extra hands made a big difference.

More PT Sir!!

As part of the Sunrise Beach Fire Protection District’s on-going program to evaluate and enhance our operational capabilities, our new probationary firefighter Jake Dill took part in a physical conditioning program that coincided with his new employee orientation. Probationary FF Dill is the first career staff member ever to have had mandatory physical training every day of his orientation.

FF Dill was subjected to numerous multi-station, multi-dimensional events. The design of this program was to simulate actual work load experiences that our members might have to face at working structure fires. The drills are aimed at enhancing what is known as operational fitness, a concept that incorporates physical fitness with the physical demands of firefighting.

Although training lasted only 7 days, FF Dill was challenged every day. If you ever see him ask him “How long can 45 seconds be?” We are pretty sure Jake has a new found appreciation for time!

And Still Another MVC

On Wednesday July the 25th the C Platoon was alerted for an MVC on Highway 5 in the vicinity of Scotty’s Drive In.  Units arriving on the scene found a mini-van that had left the roadway.  The occupants were able to self-extricate and were found sitting in the parking lot of Scotty’s.  SBFPD members ensure that there were no hazards from the vehicle and then assisted Lake West Ambulance District with providing patient care.

MVA on South 5

At 07:04 hours on July the 13th Companies of the Sunrise Beach Fire Protection District were alerted for an MVA on Highway 5 South in the vicinity of the quarry. E 12 - 22 was the first due and found a late model Ford pick–up, on its side, with the occupant who had self – extricated. Members immediately began medical care and stabilization efforts. The patient eventually refused medical care. Units form the SBFPD remained on the scene for approximately an hour to assist with traffic control.

It is ironic that the C Platoon had just finished work on our new supply of heavy duty cribbing. As you can see in one for the pictures the 4 x 6 & 6 x 6 cribbing that has been added to E 12 – 22 providing a means for the company to properly stabilize the vehicle. With the amount of roadway covered by the District it was felt that this small investment could pay off in great dividends. We are very fortunate that the victim in this particular collision was not trapped in his truck, but had it been necessary to take offensive actions we would have been able to do so in a manner that protected not only our safety but that of the people inside the vehicle.

Dock Safety

With the recent tragic incidents involving docks and electrocutions the Sunrise Beach Fire Protection District wants to re-emphasize a few basic safety items relating to docks.  Homeowners should be aware that the primary responsibility for ensuring the safety of their docks rests with the homeowner. Homeowners with questions should consult the Ameren website located at:

Another MVC

At 18:09 hours on Friday 20 July the C Platoon was alerted for a MVC on American Legion Road. Units responded and found a single car accident at the entrance to the American legion hall. The two occupants of the car were not seriously injured and ended up refusing medical care. Sunrise Beach units remained on the scene to assist Sunrise Beach PD with traffic control.

As we move through the summer session the Fire District would like to take a minute to remind everyone to slow down and drive with care. We respond to a high volume of motor vehicle collisions. Even though most of these responses are not to serious accidents, it only takes a second for a serious situation to occur. Drive safe and enjoy your time here at the Beach.

Good Luck “Captain Z”

After more than 40 years in the fire service, ten of which were here at Sunrise Beach, Captain Don Zolecki has decided to move on.  One of the senior members of our staff, Captain Z has been involved with many significant projects and has provided guidance and wisdom to many of our members.  We were lucky to have Don on our staff and wish him well in all his future endeavors.

The Board of Directors hosted a coffee & donut breakfast for the Captain On Monday 11 June. The event was well attended by our staff & volunteers, a true indicator of the respect that we have for Don.

Station 2 Updates

Now that the staffed company has settled into the new Fire Station 2, the personnel have begun working on the landscaping projects to finish off the station. The Fire District wants to make sure that the Station’s appearance adds to the neighborhood and demonstrates the pride that we have in our organization.

Through a lot of hard work the project is really coming along. We anticipate the bulk of the work to be within the next several weeks. This has been a true team project many of our volunteers have worked side by side with the career staff to move this along.

A special note of thanks goes out to our resident landscaping guru's A Platoon along with volunteer Marc Sutcliffe for the installation of the irrigation system, B Platoon along with volunteers Luke & Brandy Delhotal who spent a long hard hot day getting the site ready for sod & the A Platoon, and volunteers Marc Sutcliffe & Dave Yelton who volunteered their time to help lay the sod.

Heavy Equipment donations by: Captain Fuellemann & Michael Hufferd.
Great job to all involved!
