On September 28th, 2012, Chaplain Steve Myers, took a series of pictures of a multi-agency training. Firefighters from Sunrise Beach and Southwest Fire joined together in strength by numbers to exercise fire suppression tactics and primary search and rescue techniques.
At 23:19 hours on Saturday 22 September E 12 – 22 was alerted for a MVC response, possible entrapment, in the 12000 block of North State Highway 5. On arrival of E 12 – 22 Acting Captain Baker confirmed that one person was trapped and that units would be taking actions. Vehicle stabilization was accomplished by using cribbing and the Rescue Jack system. Hydraulic rescue tools and saw-z-alls were used to remove the vehicle’s roof and driver’s door. The patient was extricated on a long spine board and transferred to the care of a Lake West EMS unit.
On Wednesday July the 25th the C Platoon was alerted for an MVC on Highway 5 in the vicinity of Scotty’s Drive In. Units arriving on the scene found a mini-van that had left the roadway. The occupants were able to self-extricate and were found sitting in the parking lot of Scotty’s. SBFPD members ensure that there were no hazards from the vehicle and then assisted Lake West Ambulance District with providing patient care.
At 07:04 hours on July the 13th Companies of the Sunrise Beach Fire Protection District were alerted for an MVA on Highway 5 South in the vicinity of the quarry. E 12 - 22 was the first due and found a late model Ford pick–up, on its side, with the occupant who had self – extricated. Members immediately began medical care and stabilization efforts. The patient eventually refused medical care. Units form the SBFPD remained on the scene for approximately an hour to assist with traffic control.
It is ironic that the C Platoon had just finished work on our new supply of heavy duty cribbing. As you can see in one for the pictures the 4 x 6 & 6 x 6 cribbing that has been added to E 12 – 22 providing a means for the company to properly stabilize the vehicle. With the amount of roadway covered by the District it was felt that this small investment could pay off in great dividends. We are very fortunate that the victim in this particular collision was not trapped in his truck, but had it been necessary to take offensive actions we would have been able to do so in a manner that protected not only our safety but that of the people inside the vehicle.
